Quezon City, Philippines – Electricity end-users participating in Manila Electric Co.'s (Meralco) net metering program have recently surpassed 8,500, collectively boasting an impressive 50.3 megawatt peak (MWp) in installed capacity.
Ferdinand O. Geluz, Meralco's First Vice-President and Chief Commercial Officer, provided this update during the second day of the Giga Summit 2023, emphasizing the substantial year-on-year growth in both the number of NM participants and their cumulative capacity.
Governed by Republic Act No. 9513, also known as the Renewable Energy Act of 2008, the net metering program empowers consumers with renewable energy (RE) generating systems of 100 kilowatts (kW) or less to export surplus electricity to distribution utilities like Meralco. The exported power's corresponding value is then credited to the customer's monthly bill.
In 2022 alone, net metering customers collectively exported an impressive total of 20.3 gigawatts (GW). As of July 2023, this figure has already reached 16.2 GW, and projections indicate that this year's overall export is poised to surpass the previous year's achievements.
With this development, Meralco encourages more customers to participate in the net metering program which allows them to install a renewable energy facility within their premises and generate electricity for their own use. These customers, with a capacity of up to 100 kilowatts, can get credits from the excess electricity that they export back to Meralco.
