In this article, let us look at how a grid-tied solar energy system performs, how it affects a home or business’ electric load profile and more importantly, how these systems cut thousands off your electric bill.

In the old normal where adults left for work and children went to school, majority of the generated solar energy would be consumed during the day for normal household maintenance and errands and a small percent would be sold to the distribution utility (DU) to cover some of the electric consumption at night.

Now, in the new normal, when most everyone is at home 24/7, generated solar energy covers the daytime electric needs and nighttime consumption is wholly covered by the DU.

Getting a zero DU bill means getting a German solar system that can generate enough energy to cover your entire electric needs, day and night. This does not necessarily mean storing the excess energy in a battery, but selling back the excess energy to the DU and building enough credits that it covers your nighttime consumption bill.
Business load profile with solar
Businesses typically have a larger daytime load and minimal nighttime load than the average household. However, they do have the advantage of being able to fully sell generated energy on weekends, assuming there are no business operations.
Why is net metering important?
Under the pioneer legislation Renewable Energy Act 9513, net metering allows homes and businesses with grid-tied solar systems to automatically sell excess solar energy back to the distribution utility (DU) - for example, Meralco - in exchange for peso credits on your bill. These credits can then be used at the end of each month to pay for and decrease charges on your overall electric bill.
