Metro Manila, Philippines - The Philippines has long been one of the most affected countries by the climate crisis, each year threatened by the most extreme weather events. While the national government has slowly taken steps to transition away from fossil fuels, coal continues to dominate the Philippines’ power supply.
Electricity costs in the Philippines are also the highest among the Association of Southeast Asian Nations’ (ASEAN) 10 member countries at around 10 PhP/kWh (USD0.20/kWh). With the upcoming national elections, what are the presidential candidates’ stance on the renewable energy transition once they assume the highest office in the country?
The Center for Energy, Ecology and Development (CEED) executive director Gerry Arances, in an interview with philstar.com, said the first steps of the next administration should also include retiring the oldest coal-fired power plants, which are the culprits behind rotating brownouts, and stop the expansion of gas infrastructure in the country.
The nation’s next leaders should also make the environment for renewable energy investments and expansion conducive by providing support to clean energy developers, Arances said. He added that financial institutions should emulate the loan program of state-owned Development Bank of the Philippines, which provides funding support to solar power developers. [source]
The country’s energy transition will help improve energy security while attracting investments and jobs, as well as contributing to the country's climate resilience and low carbon development. To reach that point, leaders will need to make sure that the right plans are in place and are implemented properly to finally put an end to our longstanding problem of expensive, unreliable, and mostly imported energy.
